Family and friends chose to name the fund the 10-07 Charitable Fund, as the term 10-07 is emblematic of the strength, perseverance and love Toby brought to his work and life. Law enforcement uses the code 10-o7 when signing off duty. Toby’s death on 10-07-2009 felt like a call to ensure those of us still on duty continued his work. About Toby Kim Candilora
Toby Kim Candilora, loving husband, father, son, big brother, friend and advocate for so many, broke free of the bonds of ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, signing off duty early morning hours of 10-07-2009.
Toby worked in law enforcement for fifteen (15) years. In his early career, he worked in Alaska as an undercover narcotics officer. Later, he was employed by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Hillsboro, Oregon, where he was a corporal. Toby also taught Criminal Justice at Portland Community College. He graduated from the Police Academy at Weber State University, and earned a master’s in public administration through Bellevue University.
When diagnosed with ALS, Toby determined to best the disease. He made his fight public, starting the Candilora Cadets ALS walk team to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. He worked tirelessly to educate and inspire, and maintained a sense of honor and duty into his final moments.
Toby married April McGuire on July 4, 1999, in Vancouver, Washington. They are the proud parents of two beautiful daughters, Taylore Marie Candilora and Samantha Mae Candilora.
